Acting as a national inter- and transdisciplinary network, the forum promotes knowledge and discourse about landscape and landscape-changing processes. It includes mountain areas and their surroundings, (peri-)urban and rural regions, as well as the interrelations between these spaces.more

Cooperations Alpine Research

The predecessor organisation of the Forum Landscape, Alps, Parks (FoLAP) is the Interacademic Commission for Alpine Research (ICAS, see annual reports ICAS 1999–2018 and conferences and workshops ICAS). It was founded in 1999. The newly founded Forum Landscape, Alps, Parks (FoLAP) took over the tasks of ICAS in 2019 (a.o. managing the ISCAR office, Co-organization of the International Mountain Day in the ALPS).

The following organizations are important stakeholders in Alpine research, with which the FoLAP cooperates in various forms and to varying degrees:

International Scientific Committee on Research in the Alps ISCAR

ISCAR – the International Scientific Committee on Research in the Alps – was founded in 1999 by scientific partner institutions (academies, national research institutions) from six alpine countries The main reason was to provide an institutional framework for ForumAlpinum, an international, interdisciplinary Alpine research conference that was first held in 1994. ISCAR's main task is therefore to promote interdisciplinary cooperation across the Alps in the field of Alpine research. Since 2000, when ISCAR became an official observer of the Alpine Convention, the dialogue between science and politics has also become an important task. ISCAR strives to fulfill these tasks by (co-)organizing various formats and events for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary exchange between science, politics, practice, and other relevant interest groups, particularly within the framework of the Alpine Convention bodies and together with other observer organizations. In doing so, ISCAR contributes to the sustainable development of the Alpine region. The Forum Landscape, Alps, Parks manages the ISCAR office.

ISCAR’s main activities are:

  • ForumAlpinum: Since 1994, ISCAR has organised the ForumAlpinum with national partners. The ForumAlpinum is primarily a scientific conference aiming to promote international research cooperation on topics of relevance across the entire Alpine arc. The ForumAlpinum has also been designed as an interface between the scientific community and the general public, providing opportunities for dialogue among various groups. It usually takes place every four years.
  • Young Academics Award: Award for outstanding master's theses on relevant Alpine topics, a collaboration between the Alpine Convention and ISCAR.
  • AlpWeek: Alpine Week is a leading international event organized by main Alpine organizations and networks committed to the sustainable development of the Alpine region (CIPRA, ALPARC, Alliance in the Alps, Club Arc Alpin, ISCAR, etc.). It usually takes place every four years.
